Improbable's Monthly D&D Satellite
What are we going to do about Impro?
15th September 2011, 6.30 - 10pm
Council Chamber, BAC
Hosted by Improbable
(Please note that this session will start earlier than usual)
An invitation from Lee Simpson and Matilda Leyser
In the invitation to Improbable's first Open Space event Phelim wrote about how he was devoted to theatre but often found himself bellyaching about it and wanted to do some work on the things that were making him disgruntled. We find ourselves in the same place with impro; we love it, but some things about it drive us spare.
Lee:"During 30-odd years of doing impro I've watched it be the latest fad, flavour of the month, last year's thing, rediscovered by a new generation and round again. I've watched it turn from impro to improv, get on the radio, on the telly, off the telly then back on. It's been short form, long form, derided, dismissed, faked and fought over. After all that, it does now feel part of the landscape. Impro is here to stay.
But...why is it still treated with suspicion and derision by many people? Why do different improvisational philosophies feel more like religious schisms than a healthy diversity of practice? Why are the press still so weird about it? Should we, could we, have a greater sense of community?"
Matilda: "I am a new impro upstart. Four years ago I set out to train as an actor and have ended up training as an improviser because what I find in impro is a distillation of everything that interests me about performing. However as a newcomer to the impro world many things baffle me, such as...
Why is it associated with comedy?
Why is being an improviser seen as so different to being an actor?
Where are the women...?! "
It is half a century or so since the story of UK Impro began (with delicious irony) at the Royal Court; so where are we? And where should we be?
And is there, or should there even be a "we"?
If you've got anything to say, if you don't yet know what you want to say or you just want to hear what others have to say; if you find yourself passionate about impro or passionately moaning about impro, if you are an impro veteran or an improv novice, know nothing about it but are vaguely curious, know too much about it or have questions to add to ours, please come along because this event needs you.
See you there

The evening runs using Open Space technology which gives anyone the chance to propose a starting point for discussion, then take part in one of these conversations, flit between them all, or head to the bar.
This event is free! No need to book, just turn up on the night.
